Help Us Build A Well
One in five children globally does not have enough water to meet their everyday needs – UNICEF.
“The world’s water crisis is already here, and climate change will only increase it,” “Children are the most vulnerable.”
When wells run dry, it is the youngsters that miss school to go gather water. Droughts reduce food availability, causing hunger and stunting in children. Children become ill from waterborne infections when floods occur. When water resources are scarce, children are unable to wash their hands to protect themselves from sickness.”
According to the research, children live in locations with high or extremely high water risk in over 80 nations. The proportion of children living in such situations is higher in Eastern and Southern Africa.
While everyone feels the effects of water scarcity, the most vulnerable children suffer the most. Children and families in vulnerable areas are confronted with the double-edged sword of dealing with severe water shortages while also having the poorest water services, making access to adequate water particularly vulnerable to climate shocks and catastrophic occurrences.
Water demand continues to rise at an alarming rate, despite limited resources. Climate change and extreme weather events, in addition to fast population increase, urbanization, water overuse, and mismanagement limit accessible amounts of safe water, creating water stress. According to a UNICEF estimate from 2017, by 2040, nearly one in every four children will be living in places with significant water stress.
Abiola Sodiq Faniran Foundation wants to ensure every child has access to sustainable and climate-resilient water services. The foundation aims to mobilize resources, partnerships, innovation, and global response to identified hotspots where the need for safe, resilient, and sustainable water, sanitation, and hygiene services is the greatest and most urgent.
